The objectives of the CQC are to ensure that all healthcare providers operate to consistent and clear standards. As such, a dentist must comply with these standards for its services. Inspections will be carried out, and practices that are private or do not carry out NHS work will be the first to be inspected after April 2011. The 16 main registration requirements are:

 

  • Care and welfare of service users.
  • Assessing and monitoring the quality of provision.
  • Safeguarding vulnerable service users.
  • Good management of medical devices and medicine. Management of medicines and medical devices.
  • Control of cleanliness and infection.
  • Meeting nutritional needs.
  • The premises must be safe and suitable for its purpose.
  • Equipment must be safe, available and suitable for purpose.
  • Service users must be respected and involved within their treatment.
  • Treatment and care consented to.
  • Complaints.
  • Records.
  • Workers must be suitable and competent.
  • Staffing.
  • Workers must be well managed.
  • Service providers must cooperate with other providers.

 

When assessing a dental service, the CQC will not look at the performance of individuals; they will be looking at the service as a whole to ensure that standards of quality and safety are met.
