London is one of
the most vibrant and embracing cities of the world
but it can also be one of the most daunting, so
here are a few tips…..
Visas
If you do not hold a passport from a European
Economic Area country (EEA) then you will require
a visa to enable you to work in the UK . Obviously
there are many types of visas, each with differing
working time allowance etc. To find out which
one you will be eligible for, please visit www.homeoffice.gov.uk
Getting Around
- Always carry an umbrella and an A-Z. The A-Z
is the most comprehensive street maps of London
that you will find. www.a-zmaps.co.uk They cost
around £5 each and are available at most
newsagents, stationers and food and wine shops.
If you want to find the most direct route to
a specific destination then visit www.streetmap.co.uk
- The Tube (London Underground) www.thetube.com
is the easiest way to get about town, particularly
in central London. London transport also operates
buses and the over ground rail system. Visit
www.tfl.gov.uk
for more info, or if you are stuck you can always
call 020 7222 1234 for your most direct route.
You will be able to obtain tube maps from all
tube stations.
Medical
If you will be living and working in London
you will be entitled to receive free medical care
from your local doctor (your GP.) When you arrive
you must register immediately with a GP (lists
are available from your local library. In order
to work in dentistry it is essential that you
are immunised against Hepatitis B.
Please bring your vaccination evidence, plus blood
test print outs of your antibody levels with you
to the UK. If you do not have them you will be
able to arrange for a blood test or for the vaccinations
to be done at your GP.
Uniform
It is important that you always wear a clean
and clinical uniform, in order for you to appear
presentable to the dental practice and its patients.
We recommend that you do not travel to work in
your uniform, but change at the practice. Always
allow yourself enough time to do so before surgery
commences.
Most permanent employers will provide their dental
nurses with uniforms
You will be able to buy a uniform at a discounted
rate (for Tempdent employees) at www.alexandra.co.uk
Accommodation
Where are you going to live? It is really a
matter of personal choice. If you are after a
house share try visiting www.gumtree.com
or www.loot.com.
You can also try the London Tourist Board on www.londontown.com
Bank Account
Please make sure that you bring with you a recent
bank statement or a reference letter from your
bank. Once you have a regular mailing address
and proof of earnings in the UK you can open an
account at any of the High St banks www.lloydstsb.com,
www.hsbc.co.uk,
www.natwestbank.co.uk
or www.barclays.co.uk
Otherwise there are many other smaller banks you
will find when you get here. We will be able to
give you a reference letter to take to the bank
once you have registered at Tempdent.
National Insurance Number
Once you have started working, you will need
to make an appointment at your local Department
of social security (DSS) office to obtain an NI
number. You can start working before you have
been issued with an NI number. For further taxation
advice visit www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk
