Every year, Stoptober encourages thousands of people across the UK to take the first step towards becoming smoke-free. The challenge is simple: quit smoking for 28 days and you’re far more likely to quit for good.

Whilst smoking is widely associated with lung disease and heart problems, many patients don’t realise that some of the earliest signs of damage appear in the mouth.

For Dental Nurses, this presents a powerful opportunity. Every day, you support patients, build trust, and reinforce positive oral health habits. This Stoptober, we’re highlighting the important role Dental Nurses play in supporting smoking cessation and how becoming an Oral Health Practitioner can help you make an even greater impact on patients’ lives.

Smoking and oral health: What your patients need to know

Smoking doesn’t just affect overall health. It can have a significant impact on oral health, increasing the risk of:

Gum disease and tooth loss

Oral cancer

Persistent bad breath

Tooth staining and discolouration

Delayed healing following dental treatment

Many patients are unaware of these risks until they’re explained by a dental professional. That’s why every conversation matters.

For some patients, learning that smoking is contributing to bleeding gums or bad breath can be the trigger they need to consider quitting. For others, understanding the increased risk of oral cancer may be the wake-up call that starts their journey towards a healthier future.

Dental Nurses are at the heart of prevention

The dental profession is increasingly focused on prevention, education and behaviour change. As a Dental Nurse, you’re often one of the most trusted members of the dental team. Patients see you regularly, feel comfortable speaking with you and frequently turn to you for advice and reassurance.

Whether you’re discussing oral hygiene, plaque control, diet or smoking cessation, you’re already helping patients make healthier choices. But many Dental Nurses don’t realise just how much further they can take their role.

Why Oral Health Practitioners are more important than ever

Today’s dental practices need professionals who can support preventative care and improve patient understanding of oral health. That’s exactly where Oral Health Practitioners make a difference.

An Oral Health Practitioner focuses on educating, motivating and empowering patients to improve their oral health. They help people understand the links between lifestyle choices and oral disease, encouraging long-term behavioural change that can transform health outcomes. During campaigns such as Stoptober, Oral Health Practitioners are ideally placed to support smokers by providing evidence-based oral health education and reinforcing the benefits of quitting.

A single conversation could encourage a patient to seek smoking cessation support. A brief educational intervention could help someone reduce their risk of gum disease. A simple explanation could help a patient recognise the warning signs of oral cancer. These moments may seem small, but their long-term impact can be life-changing.
