The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training was developed in memory of Oliver McGowan, a young man whose life was tragically cut short due to a lack of understanding of his needs. His story has become a powerful catalyst for a national commitment to improving awareness and the quality of care.

Mandated under the Health and Care Act 2022, CQC-regulated providers are required to ensure their staff receive training that is appropriate to their role. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) offers a government-endorsed, standardised framework to meet this requirement.

Who is this training for?

Non-clinical staff, such as Receptionists, Practice Managers, and Administration or support teams, must complete Tier 1 training.

Tier 1 – General Awareness

Tier 1 begins with a 90-minute e-learning module (a required prerequisite), followed by a 1-hour interactive webinar. This level is designed to build awareness, confidence, and communication skills, helping staff understand learning disability and autism, and make simple but impactful adjustments in their day-to-day role.

  • Delivered fully online
  • Interactive sessions (up to 30 learners)

Inclusive care starts here

This training equips staff with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to provide compassionate, respectful support to autistic people and individuals with learning disabilities. It represents an important step towards providing a more inclusive, person-centred approach across all health and social care services.

We work in partnership with accredited Oliver McGowan Facilitators nationwide to deliver both Tier 1 and Tier 2 training, supporting organisations to meet their obligations and deliver high-quality, informed care.

In dentistry, this applies to every member of your team, not just clinicians, because:

  • Patients may have a learning disability or be autistic
  • Apprentices and learners may need additional support
  • Staff may not always recognise individual needs
  • Inclusive care is essential for quality, safety, and compliance

This mandatory training equips your team to:

  • Communicate with clarity, confidence, and compassion
  • Recognise learning disabilities and autism
  • Make reasonable adjustments in clinical and training environments
  • Deliver person-centred care and education

Who delivers the training?

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is co-delivered by experienced trainers, including autistic people and individuals with learning disabilities who bring essential lived experience. All co-trainers are approved and fairly remunerated for their time, knowledge, & contribution.

The content is fully aligned with the Core Capabilities Frameworks for supporting autistic people and people with learning disabilities, ensuring a consistent, evidence-based approach to care.

This training has been independently evaluated through national trials and is backed by NHS England as the recommended route for meeting statutory requirements under the Health and Care Act. It also supports compliance with the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice, published in June 2025.
