From insight to impact: How we developed the Dental Reception Excellence Apprenticeship

Dental Receptionist

In June 2026, Tempdent, in partnership with our sister company, Babington, welcomed the very first cohort of learners onto the new Dental Reception Excellence Apprenticeship.

This marks an exciting milestone, not only for Tempdent and Babington, but for the wider dental sector, as we introduce a programme designed specifically to meet the evolving needs of modern dental practices.

While we’re incredibly proud of our industry-leading success rates, we know that maintaining excellence means more than delivering high-quality training. It means listening to the sector, understanding its challenges, and responding to its future workforce needs.

The launch of the Level 2 Dental Reception Excellence Apprenticeship is a perfect example of that commitment in action.

Listening to the dental sector

At Tempdent, we work closely with employers and stakeholders across UK dentistry. Through learner feedback, employer surveys, workplace visits and ongoing engagement, we stay connected to the realities of modern dental practice.

In 2025, we strengthened this approach with the introduction of the Tempdent Roundtable Series. These in-person events bring together Practice Managers, employers, training leads and industry experts to discuss the challenges, opportunities and priorities facing dentistry today and in the future.

During our Winter 2025 Roundtable, one theme consistently emerged: a growing skills gap within front-of-house dental teams. Employers told us that while Dental Receptionists were often highly motivated and committed to patient care, existing training pathways did not fully prepare them for the unique demands of working within a dental practice.

The message was clear: the sector needed something more.

Identifying the skills gap

Dental Receptionists are often the first and last point of contact for patients and play a vital role in shaping the patient experience.

However, employers highlighted several common challenges. Many Receptionists lacked confidence when discussing dental terminology, treatment pathways and the wider patient journey. Skills gaps were also identified in communication, professionalism, operational understanding and commercial awareness.

Importantly, employers felt reception teams represented an untapped opportunity to further support patient care, practice efficiency and business performance.

It became clear that Dental Receptionists needed development that went beyond traditional customer service training.

Turning feedback into action with Babington

Tempdent’s sister company, Babington, is one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship and professional training providers, delivering high-quality apprenticeship programmes across a range of sectors.

And, following the findings from the 2025 Winter Roundtable, Babington were the first choice to collaborate and develop a new apprenticeship with!

Together we hosted two dedicated Employer Consultation Forums, involving a wider group practice managers, practice owners, training leads, dental groups and sector specialists, whose expertise, insight and commitment helped shape the final content and direction of the apprenticeship.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all members of the group for their hard work and outstanding contribution. In particular, we would like to thank Riverdale Healthcare, Bupa Dental Care, Damira Dental Studios, PortmanDentex, Today’s Dental, Rodericks Dental Partners, Malmin Dental, Envisage Dental and Obex Dental for their collaboration and invaluable input throughout the development process.

While there was strong support for the existing Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner (CSP) Apprenticeship Standard as a foundation, employers agreed that significant dental contextualisation was needed to reflect the realities of the role.

What employers told us

The consultations highlighted five key areas for development:

  • Dental knowledge – including terminology, treatment pathways and understanding the patient journey.
  • Communication skills – particularly building rapport, managing expectations and handling challenging conversations.
  • Professionalism and governance – including workplace conduct, confidentiality, complaints handling and information governance.
  • Resilience and wellbeing – helping receptionists navigate the pressures of a demanding front-of-house role.
  • Commercial awareness – improving understanding of treatment options, membership plans, appointment utilisation and the wider goals of the practice.

Perhaps the strongest message was that reception teams could play a much greater role in supporting patient journeys, treatment uptake and practice performance through confident, ethical communication.

Employers wanted a programme that combined excellent customer service skills with the knowledge, behaviours and confidence needed to succeed in a modern dental environment.

Building the solution

Using the insight gathered through the Tempdent Roundtable Series and Employer Consultation Forums, we worked closely with Babington to create the Level 2 Dental Reception Excellence Programme.

Designed specifically for the dental sector, the programme combines the nationally recognised Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard with extensive dental-specific learning, ensuring apprentices develop both the professional skills and industry knowledge required to excel in front-of-house roles.

What makes the new programme different?

Learners enrol onto the apprenticeship with Babington and are supported throughout their journey by expert tutors, alongside guidance from Tempdent’s dental training specialists. This collaborative approach combines excellence in apprenticeship delivery with industry-specific expertise, creating a best-in-class learning experience for both learners and employers.

Unlike a generic customer service apprenticeship, the Level 2 Dental Reception Excellence Programme is built around the day-to-day realities of working in a dental practice.

Receptionists are far more than administrative support. They are key members of the dental team who influence patient experience, support treatment journeys and contribute to the overall success of the practice.

Looking ahead

The launch of our first Dental Reception Excellence Apprenticeship cohort represents the culmination of months of collaboration with employers, industry specialists and training experts.

From a conversation at the Tempdent Winter Roundtable in December 2025 to Babington welcoming our first apprentices in June 2026, this programme has been shaped by the voices of dental employers across the UK.

We are excited to support the next generation of highly skilled Dental Receptionists and help practices invest in stronger patient experiences, more capable teams and long-term workforce development.

For practices looking to develop their front-of-house teams, the Dental Reception Excellence Apprenticeship offers a new and innovative pathway to excellence.
