Important changes to GDC requirements for trainee Dental Nurses…What employers and aspiring Dental Nurses need to know

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced important changes that will affect all trainee Dental Durses from 1st June 2026. These updates are designed to ensure trainees begin formal education much sooner, helping to strengthen professional standards and enhance patient safety across the sector.
At Tempdent, we welcome these changes and are here to support both employers and trainees through the transition with our Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship.
What’s changing?
1. New trainees must begin formal training within 12 months
From 1st June 2026, anyone starting work as a trainee Dental Nurse must enrol onto a recognised training programme within 12 months of their employment start date.
This replaces the current two‑year window, significantly reducing the time trainees work chairside without formal education. The GDC recommends that trainees start their programme as soon as possible after beginning their role.
2. Transitional rules for trainee Dental Nurses already in work
For any trainee Dental Nurse who is already employed before the new rules take effect, but has not yet started training, the GDC has set the following requirements:
- They must begin training by 1 June 2027, or
- Within two years of starting work, whichever comes first.
Important: Trainee Dental Nurses who have started or will start work between 1st June 2025 and 31st May 2026 must start training by 1st June 2027, even if their original two‑year deadline would have extended beyond this date.
3. Removal of the qualification completion timeframe
The GDC will no longer require trainees to complete their qualification within 12 months of its normal duration. This responsibility now sits fully with awarding bodies.
4. Reminder on the protected title ‘Dental Nurse’
Only those registered with the GDC may legally use the title Dental Nurse. Trainees are not permitted to use this title until qualified and registered.
What this means for employers
These changes will require practices to take a more structured approach when onboarding trainee Dental Nurses. Ensuring swift enrolment onto a training programme, like our Level 3 Dental Nursing Apprenticeship, will be essential to remain compliant and maintain safe standards of care.
Our entire team are here to support you and your trainee with seamless apprenticeship onboarding, the highest quality training, and flexible delivery options that suit the needs of busy dental practices.
Tempdent also offers a complimentary recruitment service for dental practices looking to hire trainee Dental Nurses. Our team will shortlist applicants, coordinate interviews with your hiring manager, and advise providing feedback within 48 hours to keep candidates engaged. Following the interviews, we gather your feedback and confirm which candidate you’d like to progress. Once you’ve made your selection and offered the position, we arrange the apprentice’s enrolment to complete the recruitment process.
