Navigating stress through dental training and recruitment

April is Stress Awareness Month, an annual campaign led by the Stress Management Society to raise awareness of stress, its impact on our lives, and the importance of managing it proactively. Observed every April since 1992, Stress Awareness Month encourages open conversations, reduces stigma, and helps individuals and organisations recognise the signs of stress before it becomes overwhelming.

What is Stress Awareness Month?

Stress Awareness Month exists to help people understand:

  • What stress is and how it affects us
  • Why long‑term, unmanaged stress can impact mental and physical health
  • How small, positive actions can create meaningful change

For Stress Awareness Month 2026, the theme is #BeTheChange, a call to small everyday action. The campaign highlights that while stress can feel overwhelming, small, consistent steps can build resilience, encourage connection, and improve overall wellbeing.

The primary aims of Stress Awareness Month are to:

  • Educate people on the causes and effects of stress
  • Promote practical stress‑management techniques
  • Encourage open conversations and reduce stigma

The Stress Management Society also offers a wide range of free resources, including toolkits, planners, journals, and stress‑management guidance for individuals and workplaces.

Understanding stress in modern dentistry

Dentistry is a demanding profession. Whether you are training, recruiting, or leading a team, pressures can build quickly, often without being noticed until stress starts to impact confidence, performance, or wellbeing. At Tempdent, we recognise that stress can show up differently depending on where you are in your career. That’s why our support is tailored to the people we work with.

  • Supporting dental Apprentices
Completing an apprenticeship alongside a day-to-day patient‑facing role is a significant commitment. Balancing coursework, assessments, day‑to‑day responsibilities within a practice, and personal life can feel overwhelming at times. We understand the added responsibility and pressure dental apprentices face, which is why Tempdent offers:

    • A team of experienced, supportive Tutor Assessors

    • Ongoing guidance throughout your apprenticeship journey

    • Clear communication and flexibility wherever possible

If you ever feel stress beginning to build, we strongly encourage you to reach out early. Contact your personal Tutor Assessor or your workplace mentor, and we can work with you to make adjustments or support before stress becomes a larger issue. You are never expected to manage it alone.

  • Supporting post‑qualification learners
Taking on additional training after becoming GDC‑registered is an exciting step, but it can also be daunting. Finding the time to attend workshops, complete modules, and prepare for final assessments while continuing to work in practice can place extra strain on even the most motivated learners.

While further qualifications can open new career opportunities, expand clinical skills and support long‑term progression, it’s equally important to acknowledge when training starts to feel stressful.

At Tempdent, we encourage post‑qualification learners to prioritise and plan workloads realistically, maintain open communication with their practice and stay in regular contact with our training team. With over 30 years’ experience in the UK dental sector, our team truly understands the pressures of modern dentistry. We are best placed to offer practical advice, reassurance, and support throughout your learning journey.

  • Looking for a new job?
Job hunting is well known to be a stressful experience. Searching, applying, attending interviews, and navigating the uncertainty of change can quickly become tiring and anxiety‑inducing. Add to that the pressure of wondering if the move is the right one, and stress can easily build.
Our specialist dental recruitment team is here to reduce that burden. Take a look at our latest vacancies

For over 30 years, Tempdent has helped candidates across the UK find their next move, covering both permanent and locum roles. We get to know you as an individual, understand your career goals and working style, and work to match you with practices that genuinely fit your needs.

We work with thousands of long‑standing employer partners nationwide, and always put people at the heart of everything we do. Let us handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on feeling confident about your next step.

  • Under pressure to recruit or cover a vacancy?
For practice owners and managers, the responsibility of hiring the right team member, or covering an urgent vacancy, can create significant additional stress alongside your clinical or leadership role. Tempdent can support you by providing access to a growing network of fully qualified, Tempdent‑vetted candidates. We help you recruit for both permanent and locum positions, and can respond quickly to last‑minute staffing emergencies with trusted locums who are always ready to step in.

Tell us exactly who you’re looking for by submitting a vacancy, and we’ll focus on finding the right fit for your unique practice, saving you time, pressure and uncertainty.

A reminder you’re not alone

Stress Awareness Month is a valuable reminder that stress is not a personal failure, it’s a shared experience, especially in high‑pressure professions like dentistry. This April, we encourage everyone we work with to:

  • Talk openly about stress
  • Use available resources and support
  • Take small, meaningful steps towards better wellbeing

At Tempdent, we remain committed to supporting dental professionals, learners and practices – not just in April, but all year round.

If you’d like to speak to our team about training, apprenticeships or recruitment support, we’re always here to help.
