You’ve got through Christmas, you’ve muddled your way through January so what’s next? If like many people you are now thinking about a change of scenery read on as our experienced recruitment team share some valuable tips on how you can get the next dental move that you want!
So you’ve found the job of your dreams and have managed to secure an interview. Read on for some top tips on how you can nail that interview!
1. Research, research, research
Before you go to the interview make sure you have done your research. Do as much research as you can to read up on your prospective new employer. Have a look at their website & their social media to get to know more about them, their style and brand. Think about how you would fit in and be prepared to talk about it!
2. Know the job you’ve applied for.
Have you seen the job description for the role you’ve applied for? If not make sure you get a copy of it before your interview. Spend some time reviewing it and mapping your experience to it. If there are areas of the job that you don’t have experience be open about it and your desire to learn!
3. Know your strengths and share them!
Knowing what you bring to the table and clearly articulating it sets you apart from the masses right away. Often, people are not clear on what they can do to specifically help a company. Hiring companies want to know what you can do for them. Sit down in advance of the interview and write a list of your key strengths and think about how they will be beneficial to the job you’ve applied for.
4. Don’t be late, plan your journey
There’s nothing worse than being late for your interview. Not only will it give the interviewer a bad impression of you but you will also put yourself under huge amounts of pressure which means you won’t perform at your best. Plan your journey in advance, use tools like google maps to plan your journey and give yourself plenty of time to get there. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before your interview.
5. First impressions count
Within moments of meeting you, people decide all sorts of things about you. Psychological studies show it takes just three seconds for someone to determine whether they like you and want to work with you. So make sure that the first impression you make is a good one and you don’t have to spend the rest of the interview battling a negative perception. Dress appropriately, be yourself and smile. Building rapport is crucial to any successful interview.
6. Know your CV well!
Make sure you are familiar with your CV. Review it in advance of going to the interview and be prepared to talk about previous roles you have had and how the experience you have gained makes you a no brainer for this job. If there are gaps in your CV be ready to explain what you were doing at that time!
7. Prepare to provide examples of your experiences
Many interviewers will use a style of interview called a competency based interview. In this instance they will ask questions to gain evidence of your experience in certain situations. They will ask questions like 'Tell me about a time when you had to give great customer service?' or 'Give me an example of when you had to deal with a stressful situation at work?' They are looking for you to provide a detailed example explaining what the situation was and the action you took to get your desired result. Think about the job, the kind of experiences they will be looking for and be prepared to share actual examples of how you have managed these kind of situations in the past
8. Communicate clearly
Speak clearly and concisely and avoid using jargon. Being a good listener is one of the best ways to be a good communicator. Remember the adage that you have two ears and one mouth and you should use them in the same ratio! In fact, around 75% of all communication is non-verbal. We can communicate a lot from our tone of voice, eye contact and body language so be aware of how you use these.
9. Prepare some questions of your own!
Many interviewers will ask you at the end of the interview whether you have any questions of your own. Be prepared with your own questions before you go as this will show you have prepared and thought about the job. Use your research of the job and practice to come up with some questions. E.g. If they are a specialist practice what opportunity is there for progression, will they support your training?
10. Next steps?
Show the interviewer that you are keen! Ask them what the next steps are and when might you expect to hear from them? If you want the job, show it!
